Black Bean Burgers

These burgers are a great meat alternative and full of flavor. It's delicious on a bun or lettuce wrap and can be made in under 1/2 an hour.

Ingredients

Yield: 5 large burgers
  • 2 cans of black beans drained and rinsed
  • 3/4 cups rolled oats
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon tamari sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • a few grinds of black pepper
  • 1 egg or flax egg
  • 3 scallions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup cilantro leaves
  • 5 slices cheddar cheese

Instructions

Step 1

Combine black beans, rolled oats, garlic, tamarind, cumin, black pepper and egg in food processor. Pulse for about a minute until roughly chopped and mixed together.

Step 2

Mix in scallions & cilantro. (Other optional spices include coriander + caraway.)

Step 3

Form into 5 large patties.

Step 4

Heat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add olive oil and pan fry patties for 2-3 minutes per side, until crispy and golden brown on outside. Add a slice of cheese to top and allow to melt.
