Cinnamon Vanilla Apple Sauce

With a fall chill in the air, warm homemade applesauce is the perfect healthy comfort food. Fresh picked apples make the most flavorful and sweet sauce.

Cinnamon Vanilla Apple Sauce

Homemade applesauce is healthy comfort food as it’s sweet, soft and smooth. With autumn upon us, fresh picked apples make the best sauce. This recipe combines softened Honey Crisp apples (that are past their prime for a nice juicy bite) and Cortland apples (which are softer by nature and have a white center).

Ingredients

Yield: 2 quarts
  • 6 Cortland Apples, cored & cubed
  • 6 Honey Crisp Apples, peeled, cored & cubed
  • (Total of about 12 cups of cubed apples)
  • 1 C water
  • 1 Vanilla Bean, whole
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick

Instructions

Step 1

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan on the stove over low-medium heat.

Step 2

Add water (more if needed). Stir every few minutes. Continue until apples are mushy.

Step 3

Remove from heat. Discard Cinnamon Stick. Remove Vanilla Bean, slice lengthwise and scrape the paste out of the shell.

Step 4

Puree apple mixture and vanilla paste in Vitamix. Add water if needed.

Step 5

Enjoy warm or chilled.

Notes

Note: I like to leave the peel on about half of the apples to add to the color of the applesauce.
